What it's like
Living in O'Brien
O'Brien is where the Illinois Valley runs out of Oregon. Past town, Highway 199 climbs toward the state line and drops into the Smith River canyon, then on through the redwoods to the Pacific. That's the appeal: big timber, quiet roads, and a weekend that can mean the clear green water of the Smith River or a walk through old-growth redwoods, both less than an hour away. Cave Junction, about ten minutes north, has groceries and Taylor's Sausage. Grants Pass is the trip for the hospital and bigger errands. Properties run from a house on a few wooded acres to larger rural parcels, some with pasture or farm zoning.
