Quick facts

Murphy at a glance

Murphy is an unincorporated community in Josephine County, on Williams Highway (OR 238) just south of Grants Pass. Downtown Grants Pass is about 10 minutes away. The Applegate River runs along the edge of the community. Murphy has its own small post office, but most homes around it carry Grants Pass (97527) addresses.

What it's like

Living in Murphy

Murphy is where Grants Pass gives way to the Applegate Valley. Head south on Williams Highway and the subdivisions turn to pasture, the Applegate River bends alongside the road, and the hills close in on both sides.

Life here is spread out but never far from town. Troon Vineyard's tasting room is a short drive into the valley, and Pennington Farms' bakery and the Whistling Duck farm store are a little farther along the same highway. Groceries, the hospital and First Friday downtown are about ten minutes back the other way.

The land runs from a few acres with a shop and a big garden to larger parcels with pasture and river frontage. Buyers come here for room to work and grow things, with town still close.

Before you buy here

The homework

Murphy is unincorporated, so Josephine County handles zoning and permits. Check the zoning before you count on a second dwelling, a bigger shop or splitting the land. Most homes run on a well and septic. Near the Applegate, check the flood zone and confirm any irrigation or water rights in writing.

In the hills, ask who maintains the access road, and get an insurance quote before you write an offer. If a property fronts Williams Highway, visit at commute time.
